The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

Legendary record producer Rick Rubin writes and narrates The Creative Act: A Way of Being; a book that is less biographical and more spiritual and sits in the realm of self-help.

If you are unaware of Rick Rubin, he is a producer who helped pave the way for hip-hop in the United States and has produced records for some of the biggest artists, such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Slayer, Slipknot, and Adele.

It was an inspiring listen. The first chapter is titled, Everyone is a Creator. Straight away Rubin offers his honest and positive words. The book is presented in a spiritual way. After the chapters, there is a chime that can be heard, and the tone of his voice is soft and warm.

It helps the reader understand that they too are an artist. No matter what field of work they are in. The important lessons I got from this are to look for clues in nature and in yourself for inspiration, to keep listening, practising and to try different things. It is important to have a beginner’s mindset.

It is a book that I need to listen to again. It’s wonderfully executed and it provides a brief insight into his past works as well as how his mind works and the valuable insights you can take from it to create the creative life you want.
